MAEDAR PHYSIOGNOMY:
THE SHAPE OF THE SKULL
⬆ The Maedar skull is large and bony, to protect against falling rock and debris. The skull is soft at birth, with the bony lobes developing through adolescence. The jaw is large, square and strong, making the Maedar formidable in combat. The eyes are large, to see well in very dark caverns. This can leave the Maedar somewhat vulnerable in bright light, thus they avoid going up to the surface world unless at night. |
MAEDAR PHYSIOGNOMY:
THE SHAPE OF THE BODY
⬆ In the confined spaces of Suternia, actions like running/sprinting are not easily accomplished, so short powerful legs for climbing in tight spaces and lifting heavy stones and boulders are much more advantageous than long legs for running in open fields. Likewise, a large muscular torso is needed for lifting and moving rocks and stones. The massive forearms make for a powerful grip. |
MAEDAR PHYSIOGNOMY:
EYES IN THE DARK
⬆ In a world where sunlight does not reach, being able to see in very low light is a necessity. Though some creatures down here are completely blind, the Maedar are not. With their large eyes, torch or lamplight is more than enough to function, and the faint glow of sparse patches of Lumocilia, a bioluminescent hair-like fungus, is enough for a Maedar to find his way safely about. Maedar eyes are always steel-grey in colour and do NOT glow, but reflect light and often appear to glow, much like the eyes of cats. |
MAEDAR PHYSIOGNOMY:
TWO HEARTS, BETTER THAN ONE
⬆ Two navels: the outward sign that the Maedar have TWO hearts. One heart pumps blood to the body at rest. The other stays dormant, kicking in under physical exertion. The two alternate during prolonged exertion such as running, and both work together under extreme conditions such as combat. |
MAEDAR PHYSIOGNOMY:
THAT FINGER!
⬆ Where humans have two fingers, the Maedar have one huge wide flat power-finger. This strong broad appendage is ideally suited to digging rocks and minerals, and carving Maedar Marks (commonly called Chulups in the Maedar tongue) The fingernail is thick and hard, and grows quite quickly as it frequently gets ground down.
CHULUPS are runes the Maedar carve or scratch into cave walls or tunnel entrances. These runes tell others if the space contains Sweetair (clean breathable air) or Fellair (toxic gases). Chulups can also indicate the presence of water and whether it is fresh and potable, or poisonous. These runes can also indicate potential hazards such as falling rock, flamable gases, and even if animals or monsters lurk nearby. |
DESCENT INTO THE DEPTHS
OF THE EARTH
⬆ Many strange creatures, malevolent and benign, dwell in the depths of Varzuun, in the region known as SUTERNIA. Among them are the Maedar, the Skryllar (the Deep Smolleks), the sinister Carponids and Seeconids, protodragons, carrion crawlers, and the dreaded Worms of the Deep. Wace has encountered many of these frightening and dangerous denizens of the World Beneath the World. Those encounters are what makes Wace a great GUIDE to Suternia, for those who have never before ventured into The World Beneath the World. |
GEOMANCY:
THE DEEP EARTH MAGIC
⬆ A talented few Maedar are endowed with the arcane art of geomancy, the deep earth magic. Geomancers are intimately connected to the Earth, and can read even the faintest details of their surroundings, in ways no others can.
In the confined spaces of Suternia, events and actions can leave an ultra-subtle record on the stones themselves. The geomancer can evoke the stones to 'tell' what has happened, even allowing the geomancer to make maps, find food & water, evade dangers and monsters, etc. |
TOOLS AND WEAPONRY OF THE MAEDAR
⬆ Many strange creatures, malevolent and benign, dwell in the depths of SUTERNIA. Some of these present a threat to the Maedar. Among them, the Skryllar (the Deep Smolleks), the sinister Carponids and Seconids, protodragons, carrion crawlers, and the dreaded Worms of the Deep. For those who have never before ventured into The World Beneath the World, having a GUIDE to Suternia is essential. Wace, having encountered many of these frightening and dangerous denizens, is one such guide. These tools and weapons are what help Wace and the Maedar people keep their world safe and sound. The Pyx, or Pyxis, both tool and weapon, is the weapon of choice for most Maedar.

WACE: A BRIEF BIOGRAPHY OF
AN ADVENTURER EXTRAORDINAIRE
⬆ Wace Pallahaxis was born in the rukkum of Gleaves. A rukkum is a close-knit small community (or tribe) of a few dozen Maedar families living and working often in very confined spaces. Many years ago, Wace left Gleaves for the adventuring life, but returns frequently to visit family and friends. His many adventures have taken him throughout Suternia, and even up to the surface world, eventually meeting the human paladin, Sir Flavius Franciscus and quickly forming a friendship with the knight, his young squire, Draven Valencourt, his friend and fellow knight, Branco Vasquez, and many others. |
THESE ARE A FEW OF
THEIR FAVOURITE THINGS...
⬆ Maedar beverage of choice is often GOLK, a tea-like warm drink, ubiquitous in Maedar culture, made with subterranean mushrooms. The Maedar also quite enjoy a variety of ales & stouts made from surface grains or also mushrooms. Grilled cavernfish and cavesnake meat (which humans call Snakon, as it resembles bacon) often comprise a typical evening meal, while grotto lizard eggs often start the day. |
